The name of the village dates to the Islamic period. The name is of Arabic origin, likely from “Banu Ssálam” or “Banu Ssálim”, which can be translated as “sons of peace” or “sons of freedom/salvation”.
The shield of the village is a shell, the shell of the Camino de Santiago, a symbol of the ancient network of pilgrim routes leading to the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. St James is the patron saint of Binissalem, better known in Mallorca as Sant Jaume.
