Vi de la Terra Mallorca – Wine Regulation on the Island

Vi de la Terra Mallorca is the regulatory body that oversees Mallorca’s wines under the IGP (Indicación Geográfica Protegida) classification. The council represents wineries and winegrowers across the island and is responsible for maintaining quality standards, certifying wines, and promoting Mallorca’s wine-growing heritage.

Wine can be produced throughout the island if registered correctly with the Vi de la Terra Mallorca and the land certificated for the growth of vines for the production of wine.

The land must be registered correctly and suitable for the production of wine. Land outside of the two denominations in Mallorca land correctly registered can be sold with the Vi de la Terra Mallorca label.

 

 

The Denominación de Origen Binissalem

The best know and most prestigious wine region in Mallorca is located in the heart of Mallorca in the Raiguer region in the center of the island.

Established in 1988, it was the first Balearic wine region to receive this official quality status.

The denomination is well known throughout Europe and exports to Germany Scandinavia and the United Kingdom.

It covers five municipalities in central Mallorca: Binissalem, Consell, Santa Maria del Camí, Santa Eugènia, and Sencelles. With 605 hectares of vineyards. 

Grape Varieties: The region is famous for its native grape varieties, primarily Manto Negro for reds and Moll (also known as Prensal Blanc) for whites. Recently, a new variety Escursac has been incorporated into  official regulations.

The region produces a range of red, white, rosé, and sparkling wines.

Red Wines Which often have high alcohol content, balanced acidity, and aromas of ripe fruit.

White Wines Known for being fresh and vivid with fruity and floral.

The Denominación de Origen Pla i Llevant

 Established in 1999, covering the central plain of the island Pla de Mallorca and the eastern coastal region of the Llevant.

It covers nineteen municipalities Algaida Ariany Artà Campos Capdepera  Felanitx Llucmajor Manacor Maria de la Salut Montuïri Muro Petra Porreres Sant Joan Sant Llorenç des Cardassar Santa Margalida Santanyí Sineu Vilafranca de Bonany. With 444 hectares of vineyards.

Less well known than the DO of Binissalem the denomination has a growing reputation particularly for the production of sparkling wines and white wines.

Grape Varieties: The region is famous for its native grape varieties, Callet, Mantonegro, Fogoneu, Gorgollassa, Premsal Blanc (Moll) and Giró Ros.

The region produces a full range of wines including fresh, fruity whites; rounded and structured reds; aromatic rosés; and sparkling wines.

The regions Raor Brut Nature sparkling wine made in the traditional method  similar to Cava or Champagne, receives reviews ranking it with the best of the larger producers.

White wines from the region regularly receive accolades and awards for their quality which matches anything available in the rest of Europe
