Fira del Fang

Marratxí is a collection of population centres and small villages grouped together into a municipality in the Raiguer region, between Palma and Santa Maria del Cami.

It is best known as the ceramic’s capital of Mallorca, and is a member of Spain’s ceramics cities community. Its ceramics tradition has existed since the 17th century, it has potteries working in both the traditional and avant-garde styles.

The brand ‘Cerámica de Marratxí’ was established to unify the promotion and dissemination of the artistic and commercial creators under the same label.

And promote the annual Fira del Fang, the Ceramics Museum, the School of Ceramics and international the Biennial Ceramics Exhibition.

Marratxí lies about 12 minutes by car or 17 minutes by train from Palma, with excellent access via the Ma-13 motorway and the train line connecting Palma to Inca and Sa Pobla.

It also has excellent connections by bus and cycling routes into central Palma.

Its location makes it ideal for those work in the capital of the island and international residents who work across Europe and value its close proximity to the capital and the airport.

There is little information about the symbolism of the coat of arms of Marratxí.

But the symbolic burial of a sardine each spring in Pòrtol as Carnival ends and the period of Lent begins suggests it’s a reminder that the sobriety of the church dominates over the excesses of Carnival.

Each year burial is attended by enthusiastic party goers, who follow the funeral cortege and then indulge in a little more excess before Lent begins.
