El Casco Antiguo or Gothic city. The late medieval city of Palma de Mallorca once surrounded by meters high defensive walls, its history dates back to the pre-Roman era but the majority of what can be seen in the modern era is medieval or later 18th century buildings. Also known as the central district there are 13 distinct neighbourhoods, each of which has its own unique history. The Romans established a port on the shoreline which was then added to by the Moors who enclosed the area surrounding what is now the cathedral and Parc de la Mar which is where you can now find both the Arab Baths, and the streets that made up the old Jewish quarter of the early mediaeval city.
